End of Week Review 6/2/2017

I woke up yesterday in bed feeling like a cartoon character that went "SPLAT" on the sidewalk from a tall building! As I assessed my situation by lifting an arm up, then trying a leg, it dawned on me: IT WAS MY BIRTHDAY! I've never felt like that on my birthday before. I must be officially OLD! Another thing dawned on me: I had good reason to feel so rough. I did my basic workout the day before then worked on the garden by raking, lifting, hauling, and dumping. My body was informing me that I had done the equivalent of a Junkyard Workout. So, if you want to feel older on your birthday, do a killer workout a day or two before so you can officially feel another year older.

Speaking of gardens, how many of you are planting a vegetable garden, or at least some plants in a pot for your window sill? We do raised beds in a garden space. I prefer to grow mine organically. There is a great satisfaction growing your own food, for some reason. We expanded our garden to it's final size. I have to get plants this year because the growing season started late due to late freezing temps. What about you? What do you grow and how do you prefer to grow your veggies?

Hey, Rails-to-Trails has a petition on their website to encourage President Trump to not cut funding for our bike and hike trails across the U.S. If you feel led, you can sign it or send a letter to your Congressman. On the site, you can also find bike and hike trails around home or when you are out travelling.

If you would like to track your miles this summer, feel free to send your name/moniker, exercise mode, and mileage to us. I will post it on our Events page so you can do a friendly competition with others. Let me know if you have a FitBit. We can be FitBit Buddies! It's one way you can stay motivated to workout when it is vacation season.

Using Activity Trackers Effectively
If you got one of those nifty activity trackers for Christmas, but your ready to toss it because you don't see it's value, read here.

Why Health Foods Aren't Always Low-Calorie

One of the frustrations I run into are with people who insist that the Health part of Totally Fit 4 Life should be a bunch of special health foods and supplements. First, we are NOT in with this group of well meaning individuals.Healthy Lifestyles does not work in that realm as a weight loss/health improvement program. Second, if you walk through a natural foods market like Whole Foods, Sprouts, or Earth Fare, you will discover a lot of "healthy" junk foods! Cake, ice cream, chips, and cookies abound in these stores. Supposedly healthy foods are not always low calorie, so if you want to lose weight, while getting your cholesterol and blood sugar under control, do these:

  1. Be sure to eat unprocessed foods that are low in animal and trans fats, low in sugars, and lower in carbs.
  2. Know how many calories you should take in for your body weight, age, and activity level.
  3. Know your food basics by checking MyPlate.gov.
  4. Compare nutrition labels. Watch out for fat grams (especially palm oils like coconut), sugar grams (even honey, agave, etc.), and sodium (that includes sea salt).
  5. Junk food is junk food, regardless of whether you buy it at your local supermarket or natural foods store.
  6. Never supplement unless you healthcare provider tells you to do so. You could overdo vitamins, minerals, protein, and more. Or you could have expensive potty trip. Think about it.
  7. Look for good fiber and nutritional content.

Not only can these foods be high in calories, they are also more expensive. Be reasonable and practical when it comes to shopping the natural foods stores. Buy what you can at your local grocery, then go to the natural food store for what you need. Your wallet and waistline will thank you for it.

May God bless your weekend!
