End of Week Review 4/7/2017

Hi! We are traveling right now. It has certainly been an adventure! On our way to Florida for the Sun-n-Fun Fly-In, we were stranded in Atlanta by the storms. From 5:30 pm to 2:30 am the next day, we ran into delays and cancellations. No hotels and no rental cars within 100 miles because of the Masters Golf Tournament. UGH! We tried to get a room at a nearby hotel, but we did find a slightly padded bench in a corner of the lobby and took a short nap before we hunted down the next flight to somewhere in Florida. We were exhausted and a bit hungry by the time we found a sympathetic Southwest ticket counter person who helped us get a ticket. When my hubby told her I had got out of the hospital from a heart attack a week ago, she gave me priority boarding and a wheel chair. It was a blessing because I still have a lot of fatigue as I continue to recover. Image at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, Lakeland, FL.

As you know, it is hard to get food in the airport for anyone with celiac and food allergies. But God blessed me! Guess what I found? Dried fruit (GF without sulphur dioxide), raw almonds, and veggie sticks. This was my "meal" which was NOT rice cakes and Larabars. In the past, I have lost weight due to not being able to find anything other than what I could pack. Yay!

We are here now in a seminar as I write. So, what does this all have to do with Christian health, fitness, and wellness? Actually, a lot. First, it's important to do something you enjoy. It is a great stress relief. Some people ride Harleys or take boats to the lake. My hubby flies planes. I'm learning to fly with him as a support to what he enjoys. This makes the bond in our marriage stronger. Happy hubby, happy life! Pssst. I'm partial to the cute purple gyrocopter! Second, nutrition is very important, especially with allergies. I try to keep my body out of starvation mode while I try to keep from being sick. Third, I am active in my recovery. Besides, I scored around 15,000 steps by 7 pm on my FitBit. Yes, I took some time to sit. And I had a good report from the doctor. She was actually surprised when she heard about what happened. She said, "You are the LAST person I would expect to be in the hospital with a heart attack!" But she knows I am at risk for coronary artery spasm due to fibromyalgia, not clogged arteries. Fourth, be willing to swallow your pride when necessary. It was hard to accept the wheelchair, but the site from the heart catheterization and my fatigue levels convinced me to accept it. Usually I am the one pushing my Mom around in one. Now I have a greater appreciation for her perspective. There is a lot more to Christian health, fitness, and wellness than what people think.

Tomorrow, April 8, is the kick-off for riding the bike trails. The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is hosting a kick-off day for the spring opening of the bike trails. To find an event in your area and more information go to Rails to Trails Conservancy Opening Day Event.

In case you missed them:

Go Back to Basics with Nutrition

I've been working with the Healthy Lifestyles groups over the past couple of months. One thing that stands out in the course of leading these groups is that taking nutritional supplements masks nutritional deficiencies from poor eating habits.  It is essential to eat a basic healthy diet of unprocessed, lean proteins, fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, complex carbs, and plenty of water. So called "health experts" who peddle supplements and those who are into crazy health practices, have shot me down because I don't adhere to their practices, rather what is within my scope of practice. My question is "Why spend a fortune, tossing money down the toilet?" You also don't want to overdo trace minerals and fat soluble vitamins, which could cost you big time with your health. Begin with the basics, then find out what you still need nutritionally. Your doctor can do blood work to find out what you may lack. Then supplement what you really need. If you need help figuring out a diet plan, see a nutritionist or dietician. Just because a friend recommends you drink wheat grass smoothies or eat sprouted grains bread, doesn't mean you do. You also don't need to keep pouring money into someone else's pockets buying trendy weight loss nutritional supplements. Use that money to buy the good nutritious food first.

Have a blessed weekend!
