End of Week Review 1/13/2017

Have you had your eyes examined yet? It's good to have them checked to make sure they are healthy. After all, they are a part of your body. I went for mine this week. I met with a new eye doctor this time. What is interesting is how much he teaches his patients about eye health, even if their eyes are healthy. He explained what happens to the eye when people don't wear sunglasses in the bright sunlight. Parts of the back of the eye where light strikes to convert images into a mental picture can be damaged easily. It's almost like pixelation of a digital image. Small sections get damaged and no longer record the image as well. Another thing he told me was to keep eating my veggies because my check up went very well. Yes, eating your vegetables make a big difference in eye health. Your eyes need the vitamins and minerals from them as much as the rest of your body. Take the time to find out how your eyes are doing. They are amazing in their construction by our Great Designer God. Oh, by the way, all of my doctors have no problem acknowledging God as our great designer. How cool is that!

One disappointment I had was the television programming while sitting in the waiting room. A children's program from a public broadcasting network with cartoon characters was teaching children about Asian culture (no reflection on the eye doctors or staff). The representation of Asia in a guest character had the child characters follow him in a meditation exercise! When they finished, one of them said, "Thank you for leading us in meditation, It was great!" Whoa! How is this neutral in religion??? They can learn about the religion of a culture through observation and explanation. They don't have to be taken through the exercise for children to learn about it. Kids can learn to calm down and be reasonable human beings without doing exercises like this.This is, in my estimation, brain washing people's children without their consent. The whole Zen/New Age culture dominates the religious fabric of our culture because people in the US don't recognize it for what it really is: religion. Christians need to be careful about taking these practices and beliefs in. God clearly says for us to leave other religions alone (Deuteronomy 30:16-18, among many, many more). Christian parents should be teaching their children about their own faith, not the television dumping other views into their heads.

Maybe you've seen these odd orbs by the root vegetables like carrots and beets, but wondered what they were. They aren't a common vegetable on American dinner tables anymore, unfortunately. So I would love to introduce you to turnips.I first learned about them from my first husband who loved them raw or cooked. While looking them up, I discovered a gold mine of nutrition in these interesting white/purple things. First, for you weight-conscious people, a medium turnip is only 34 calories- ll 122 grams! No wonder I like using these as an alternative for potatoes every once in a while. So here is the nutritional resume' of this cruciferous vegetable: high in potassium, fiber, vitamin C, manganese, includes 1.1 g protein, calcium, iron, B-6, magnesium, folate, and copper. Second, there are some out-of-this-world health benefits. It is fantastic for reducing inflammation in the colon, including flare-ups of diverticulitis,very valuable for reducing cancer risk as well as delay or impede certain types of cancer, a super heart health saver for vascular health and reducing blood pressure, and eye health such as reducing risks of macular degeneration for those who are considered at risk for developing it. Weight loss people, it will help you feel full longer, detox the body (along with all fruits and vegetables), and is super low in calories. Keep in mind, that whatever you add to turnips in cooking will change the calorie content such as margarine, milk, cream, etc so be careful!. Because it is in the same family as broccoli and brussel sprouts it has a nice distinctive zip that tastes great both as the root part and the tops. Bonus: Review of the Octane Free Runner

Recently, my hubby and I had the opportunity to check out the Octane Free Runner at a local exercise equipment chain called American Home Fitness in the Detroit/Toledo area. Since running on hard surfaces will take its toll on a runner's feet, knees, hips, and back, this would allow the runner to continue to enjoy the benefits of running without adding to the damage already sustained because there is ZERO impact. It is very easy to use and relatively compact for in-home use. When I got on it, I discovered I could use it as a stepper, elliptical, or runner. How nice! Resistance can be varied to increase your exercise experience. The only negatives I found with it were the price tag- OUCH! and some people may have problems with the free-ness of movement. I loved it, but my hubby didn't for that very reason. It would also be a great part of a runner's winter training. If the price tag is overwhelming, NordicTrack Freestrider may be a more affordable alternative, but I've not been able to try theirs out.
