The Power of God's Word

A woman who was a new missionary at a Native American mission in the Southwest U.S., learned a lot from a seasoned pro during a tense moment. Several of the locals were upset about the mission being in their small town. It's presence seemed to put a damper on the gambling business and alcohol sales of the Native American reservation. The mission was converting people to Christ so people's lives were changed!

One particular day, a group decided to put pressure on the missionaries to move out. They tried to use a legal clause to get rid of the mission presence in their town. The new missionary was sweating as she rifled through government paperwork in their office. She wanted to show they had gone through the proper channels and were legally allowed to be there. Triumphantly, she came into the multi-purpose room breezing up to the seasoned missionary, a 70 year old woman with years of wisdom and experience. "I found the paperwork for the approval of the purchase of this land for our mission and the deed," she stated to her mentor. The elderly woman sat there with her worn Bible on her lap. "You have a lot to learn yet, my dear, " the elderly woman replied. The door flew open as several locals began yelling at them. The elderly missionary never flinched. She simply opened up her Bible and began to read what was on the page in front of her. The astonished newbie watched over the next few minutes as the angry people began to quiet down, then one by one, calmly shuffled out the door. After the last one exited, she asked the wise woman, "What happened?"

"My dear, we cannot win a spiritual battle with paperwork and legal contracts. Spiritual battles are won through prayer and the Word of God. I was praying here while you were in our office. Yes, we are legally here, but that really doesn't matter. You see, the devil can't argue with the Truth. Never underestimate the power of God's Word."

Jesus knew the power of Scripture. During His time in the wilderness (desert), Satan tried to tempt Him (Matthew 4:1-11). The devil knew full well that Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection from the dead would change eternity for us. It was a ridiculous notion to try to keep Jesus from completing His mission because Satan's eternity was already determined, Satan and his demons would die in the Lake of Fire at judgment (Revelation 20:14-15). Three times he offered Jesus what was not his to offer in the first place. When Jesus was presented with lies and perversion of the Word of God, Jesus set him straight with the real Word of God. There is power in message on the pages of our Bibles.

Christians in America enjoy the freedom to read the Bible. Most of us have more than one  copy of the all-time best seller in our homes, yet they look as good as the day we bought them. Many never open them! Sure, we have Bible apps on our smartphones and tablets, but many of us only read them when we are in church. I dare say that one day, we may wish we had read our Bibles because it may become illegal to own one someday. Don't think for a moment it would never happen, because in many countries it has been and currently is illegal to own a Bible. People have lost their lives for having even one page from a Bible. The reason why is because of the power of the Word.

The Word of God has power to shut Satan down, change lives through salvation (Romans 10:17), correct, train, reveal Truth (2 Timothy 3:16), build up (Acts 20:32), wash hearts clean (John 15:3), and is multiplied (Acts 12:24). This Book has been on the best seller list for much longer than any other book. It has been protected through centuries of persecution of believers with numerous attempts to eradicate it. One thing is for sure, it cannot be erased from the hearts and minds of the faithful when we commit it to memory.
Trust in the power of God's Word.

May God bless you!
