Deuteronomy 4:32 NIV
“Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of?”
Read Isaiah 40
My husband had a business trip to the Silicon Valley in California last year. He decided to take me with him. When we arrived, we were tired. We checked into the hotel then took an evening stroll around the property. It felt good to take a walk after sitting for so long on the plane. Twinkle lights graced the fake trees by the pool imitating twinkling stars. The sounds of “Cr-r-roak!” and “Chir-r-r-rup” caught my attention. As I listened, I realized it was pre-recorded. The hotel used it to give the guests a feel of being out in nature by the pool.
Later that week, after we arrived home, we walked outside in our yard star-gazing. It was spectacular because there is no light pollution from cities where we live to hide their beauty. I also heard “Cr-r-roak!” of frogs and “Chir-r-r-up” of crickets. These were the real deal! All the twinkle lights and fake nature sounds were extremely poor imitations of what only God our Creator, the Maker of all things, could create from nothing. The sense of awe and wonder filled my heart as my husband and I praised God together for His marvelous works!
Isaiah expressed this same awesome wonder as encouragement to Israel as God ended the hard labor of her days. Israel had been in captivity for a very, very long time. The people cried out to God and He heard them. God in His compassion offered them comfort from their trouble. Isaiah was sent to give them the good news of a mighty Creator God who loves and cares for them as a Shepherd for his sheep. He gave them hope and peace.
God compared man’s works to His as being unable to capture the image of our Creator, as an idol, a poor imitation made of metal or wood. Our Mighty God, who was here from the beginning, created all things and rules over all things, can care for Israel who is like a mere speck of dust in the great cosmos. He never gets tired needing sleep. He is able to pick us up and carry us as on wings of eagles when we can no longer go on our own steam. He is our mighty God!
How foolish it is to believe we could put ourselves up as gods! We cannot save ourselves, whether it be with idols of crystal, nor yoga poses and mantras. What poor substitutes! Nor can we channel energies from the cosmos to balance the forces of the Universe. We are created in the image of God, but we are NOT God. All of our works are poor imitations of what only our God can do. How much better to worship our Creator than the Creation! When we are tired and overwhelmed, feeling our frailty, let us gaze at amazement of our mighty God who created the Universe and us. He gives us rest and comfort like no other.
Take the time this week to stand in awestruck wonder of the power of God through His creation today. Reflect on our own inability to be God nor stand above His awesome creation. Accept your own weakness and dependence. We can lean on the Lord daily for His strength and peace. Give Him the praise and glory due His Name!
May God bless you!
