I'm intrigued by the attitudes about the holidays, especially Christmas, on social media. It's as if a war is being waged from different fronts. One group wants everyone to wish people "Happy Holidays" to not offend anyone. Another group wants us to "Shop 'til we drop" while racking up $$$$ debt! Yet another wants us to just "Believe"; believe what??? But a lot of Christians seem indignant and offensive because they are afraid Jesus will be left out so they force everyone to say, "Merry Christmas". Why?
A few years ago, w decided to share our Christmas cheer with an atheist neighbor. We went to his house with a plate of cookies and a Merry Christmas card , as we did with the neighbors on the other side of us. One day, our son came home with a package of German Marzipan wrapped neatly with a bow and a Happy Solstice card! We never thought about solstice. Kwanza or Hannukah, maybe. As we got to know this man, it became apparent to us he just needed for us to care about him. If we were indignant about his card, taking offense at it, our witness for Christ would be lost. My point is this, don't expect non-Christians to understand Jesus significance because they can't apart from God opening the eyes of their hearts. The whole Starbucks controversy is ridiculous. You should see the outrageous things Christians have read into the mermaid of the Starbucks logo! Ugh! If they aren't a Christian company, why do we expect them to behave in a Christian manner? Of course, no one should be forced to say, "Happy Holidays" by their employer if it doesn't reflect what they observe. We make our faith a mockery when we pick fights instead of loving people into the Kingdom. Let's wish people a "Merry Christmas" with love and joy. Keep it simple.
