We live in a world full of negativity so it seems. When it was slow in the fitness center at work, I caught glimpses of news stories on the televisions. I think the most positive news over the course of several months was the birth of the royal baby in Great Britain. There was a man who read the newspaper faithfully while he rode the recumbent bike. I jokingly asked him, “Is there anything good in there?” His usual reply was, “Not yet.” How easy it is to get caught up in the negative whirlwind surrounding us. Our views of God, ourselves and other people are reflected through our thoughts, words, and actions. What we need is a some positivity! However, we need much more than just positive thinking; we need the mind and heart of God who has transcended all things. We need His power to see things correctly.
The apostle Paul writes, in Philippians 4:7-9:"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you."
We can take charge of our thoughts and transform our lives. One of the ways this change happens is by understanding your need for Jesus to come into your life. We all fall short of the perfection God intended. We are separated from God by our sin. It is by accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior that opens up a relationship with God through which He transforms our hearts. When we have Him in our life, He shows us what needs to be cleaned and renewed. This is the beginning of a fresh new attitude.
In order to change our viewpoint of life and the world around us, we need to have the mindset of Jesus Christ. This comes through community with other Christians (Romans 15:4-6) the study of the Bible to know God's will (Romans 12:1-3) and allowing the Holy Spirit, the spirit of God, to change your heart and your viewpoint (Psalm 51). Having the mindset of Christ will bring about a healthy view of your life and what surrounds you.
Positive thinking is good, but godly joy-filled thinking erases negative thinking while replacing it with right thinking. No gloom and doom nor, conversely, rose-colored glasses either. We can think of all things "noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable" since we know then what those things should be.
If you haven't done the first thing, why not do so today? It is the doorway to a transformed life with a whole new view!
1. Begin a relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. Have the mind of Christ.
3. Allow the Holy Spirit room to change your heart and viewpoint to have a new life.
