The Time Is Now!

Got cabin fever this winter? if you live where the sun rarely shines and the temps dip super low, you are not alone. It can be quite depressing if you let it. Look and work ahead for spring! If you love running or cycling outdoors, now is the time to train.

Runners can get a good head start on long distance running without freezing or slogging through snow.  Treadmills can be a great tool, but tracks are better. Why? Because the propulsion forward from the track surface is more tiring building up your stamina.  However, if the track at your gym, high school or local college athletic center is level like most, then the treadmill can help you prep for hills. You will be outdoors as soon as you hear the birds chirp!

Bicyclists don't have to be bored on a recumbent bike in the fitness center. Some fitness centers have spinning bikes and uprights. Although they don't simulate the tilt of turns, they do help prep you to handle the endurance of long rides and tension adjustments help with hills.  Spinning classes are also great for training. Some people buy bike trainers for home using the bikes they will be riding on the trails and roads. Do you see the trees zipping by in your mind's eye? I do this and find it an ideal training opportunity.

Either activity or both, you can get ready with these tips:

  1. Wear the shoes and clothing you will use for your activity while you train.
  2. Warm up and cool down with stretching on each side of the workout to avoid injuries.
  3. Play around with tempo, speed, intensity and time. You will quickly find your limits so you know what you have to work with.
  4. Set up a 6-week plan or look for them on sites listed below.
  5. Training indoors doesn't have to be boring. Use different workout sets by mixing them up and training with a friend.
  6. Put on your favorite tunes with a good pace that will help you set your rhythm.
  7. Chart your progress.
  8. Be aware of the potential for stresses and strains that can happen if you push too hard too fast. There are plenty of apps that are free to low cost out there.
  9. Make sure your bike is tuned up if you are using a trainer.  A training tire can be used to prevent wear on good tire tread meant for outdoors.
  10. Use a heart rate monitor to help you train by heart rate ranges.
  11. Get outdoors as soon as weather is reasonable.

Have a great time as you think about the breeze and sunshine on your face because it won't be long before you are out there!

May God bless you!
