End of Week Review: Feb. 13, 2015

Valentine's Day is tomorrow. I hope there is someone who shows you how much you are loved.  But better yet, that you feel loved by family and friends every day.  If there isn't, please know that God loves you! (John 3:16)Showing love through concentrated time together is vital to emotional, physical, and spiritual health.Happy Valentine's Day!

"Three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown in prison for his teachings. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he was a Christian, but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailer's daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer's daughter a farewell letter, signing it "From Your Valentine." Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, well-loved by all, received notes to his jail cell from children and friends who missed him."

Super Food of the WeekAlmonds
Almonds may seem hefty at 164 calories for 24 kernels, but they are full of wonderful benefits! These tasty gems contain healthy unsaturated fats, protein, manganese, magnesium, vitamin E, and fiber. Next to pistacchios, they lower in fat for tree nuts.  Almonds are best raw since they will not have added oils or salt, with the fiber intact.  Eat them as a snack, sprinkled on salads, or in snack mixes. Drink them in almond milk which comes in different calorie levels. Or eat them as yogurt!  They make a great pick-me-up mid-morning or mid-afternoon to hold you over to your next meal.

Exercise Tip of the Week:Deadlift
The deadlift is a very misunderstood exercise that can easily injure your back if it is not done correctly.  When performing this exercise, it is important to never lock your knees. Keep the back flat as you lower your upper body with weights down toward the floor, then raise back up again. This exercise targets the hamstrings, gluts and lower back. A variation would be a Good Morning.
